Thirty-Ninth Hex - [Written]

[As usual, Draco has once again gone and made himself scarce from a majority of the village as he works out more of his inner dilemmas. First and foremost, there's Hermione. She's most definitely, definitely not the same Hermione and it's freaking him out.

Secondly, he's officially given up on searching for Caroline Forbes. After running into other vampires...it's safe to say the blonde will never show up again.

And thirdly...? Even with his power, even with his abilities to turn into a coyote or produce patronuses or blow things up, he's finding it isn't enough to make him happy.

Recently he's returned from a mission, but he couldn't help but constantly think about the last experiment. He'd been convinced he was someone else, and he had absolutely no memories of who he really was...and it was nice. He was able to function like a normal human being again. Normally, he would make an elaborate announcement about his return, but this time...well, he's already pieced together what's happened in the village, and he's not sorry he's missed the tornado. No, instead he's entirely focused on what he's determined to find out. When he opens his journal, he's only got one sentence he'd like to share.]

What do you reckon it takes to bargain with our captors to permanently erase memories? Just curious.

I was in the Hunger Games.

[...Which pretty much no one here knows about. So she starts writing before he can ask.]

We have 12 districts where I'm from. Every year, each one sends a boy and girl young man and young woman from twelve to eighteen to the Capitol. They're dressed up, trained for four days, then sent into the arena.

Once in the arena, it's all about survival. Last one alive wins.

District Twelve, yes.

I died because I wanted to take my time in killing her.

[The reply takes a few moments to come. Clove actually has to think about it. Or how to word it.]

It's a game. Entertainment for the Capitol. [Not the Districts. It's supposed to be, according to the Capitol, but it's not. She knows that.] The sponsors like pain and blood and a spectacle.

I was going to deliver.

I was going to make it a kill they'd talk about for a decade. Or more.

Everything.

If I remember the Games, I have to remember what happened to me. If I remember Panem at all, I need to remember the Games. To know I did it. Just like I was supposed to.

So, I'd want it all gone. Totally blank.

[That's not entirely true, but it's close enough.]

Not really.

The Gamemakers here have done it to me twice already. Once by substituting those memories with others, the second by wiping everything.

Because that's not part of the game. It's better to take it away, then bring it back. Take, give. We're all pawns in this little game, and they like reminding us of it.

We're all giving them a good show.

We've been in the Games.

We know an arena, the Gamemakers, and we know someone's always watching. You don't even breathe in the Games without someone watching you.

In the Games? Or here?

It's televised every year. All of Panem watches. So you know, long before you go in, that there are cameras everywhere.

The Gamemakers hide them. Sometimes you can hear them, like when they're doing a close-up, but usually you just know they're there somewhere. It doesn't all air, but that doesn't mean the Gamemakers don't see everything.

You don't want to do that there.

The more people see you and like what they see, the more liikely you are to get supplies yours run low.

There aren't too many supplies to steal. Sometimes a tribute knows how to hunt and forage -- they've usually got good food to take.

Usually, the Career pack has the majority of the supplies stockpiled. They're usually the last alliance to dissolve, and they're usually the strongest of the triibutes. Most tributes aren't fast enough or bold enough to steal from them.

And if anything happens to those? There aren't any more.
